We just received these really cute "Cowgirl Pouches" from Erda Leather. It's a cute little bag that you can wear around your waist or use as a shoulder bag. It has a flat outside back pocket. The flap, which is just the little piece of "burn-out" calf on top for easy access, hides a zip top. The bag measures 7" high by 8" wide by 1/2" deep . It's shown here in their blue combo but we have them in neutrals.

The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store, is featuring work by Whitefish basket maker, Chrystal Higgins during the month of October. Chrystal took her first basket weaving class in 1997, instantly became hooked, and started teaching others how to weave in 1999. Chrystal specializes in unique gourd and contemporary baskets, as well as antler baskets, a great deal of which is special order consignment baskets. Always striving to expand her knowledge, she constantly experiments with new materials and techniques, in a multitude of basket forms.

Chrystal's original basket designs have been awarded numerous Best of Show awards, as well as winning several local, state and national awards. Partly because she always sneaks in lots of tips and techniques during class time and strives to make basket making a fun and stress-free time for all of her students, Chrystal has been given the nickname of "Montana Wild Woman" by her basket-weaving buddies and students.

Meet Chrystal during Whitefish Gallery Night, Thursday, October 6th, 2011 from 6-9 PM. Chrystal’s work will be displayed during the opening and throughout the month of October.

Horseshoe Nail Jewelry from Lisa Rideout

We are featuring work by Whitefish jewelry artist, Lisa Rideout during the month of September. Searching for a change of lifestyle for she and her son, Lisa Rideout decide to move from her home in Kansas City, Missouri, to Montana about eight years ago. As she readied herself for this huge change, her cousin gave her a cross made out of horseshoe nails to hang on the car’s rear view mirror. It became the symbol of family, strength and hope for their new life as they came across country, through the Rockies to the Flathead Valley. That trip was a long one and the horseshoe nails that dangled from the mirror became a great source of inspiration to her as she found a new home and settled in Whitefish.

One day, about five years ago, she discovered a box of rusty horseshoe nails in a friends barn sale and she snapped them up in a second—establishing the first inventory for RideOut’s HideOut, the name of Lisa’s creative business. She made gifts for family and friends from the horseshoe nails, and then moved on to selling necklace designs with the other jewelry she created as a hobby. Today, Lisa’s wearable art has grown from men and women’s neckware, to bracelets, to children’s necklaces and accessories. Each horseshoe nail is hand-crafted to fit a specific design in her product line, with the more elaborate pieces including colored wiring and crystals for that extra bit of bling we all love to show off once in a while! Her designs continue to evolve and change as customers repeat her visits and as new people discover her work.

We received these wonderful bird feeders from Dana Minette yesterday. Dana uses reclaimed wood and roofing material to make the base of the bird feeder. Pens from Merrily Made

Years ago Merrie Buchsbaum grew up on a farm with a big red barn in a tiny New England town overlooking what the locals called Blueberry Hill. Merrie's family had a huge garden and many farm animals that both her parents and siblings adored. From when the snow melted in the spring until the ground froze in the fall, Merrie and her family tended the garden. Merrie remembers the sweet fruits, colorful vegetables, gorgeous flowers and yummy
treats her mom made.

Today Merrie has her own organic gardens, filled with fruits, vegetables and flowers that she grows and harvests. She is inspired by her youth but also brings an abundance of new ideas to her property. For the past twelve years Merrie has been mixing her plants and artwork together. She is excited to offer her newly designed Garden Pens. Each pen has an element that comes directly from Merrie's garden. She dries and grinds the plant matter and then mixes it with the transparent polymer to create the subtle color and floating pieces. She carefully makes each pen in her CT studio overlooking her beautiful yard. Merrie's pens are her way of
sharing her childhood, artwork, passions and gardens.

Each pen has a colorful photo of the plant and a description about what makes it so special to Merrie. For example: the watermelon hang tag reads: "Yum! There's nothing juicer than a fresh slice! Spitting the pits in the yard and relaxing under a tree". Pens from left to right in the photo above: twigs, compost, wheat grass, seeds, lavender, watermelon, rosebud, daffodil and hydrangea.

John Murphree has been a designer craftsman for over 40 years, exploring many mediums including leather work, beading, scrimshaw, silver smithing and finally wood working. In 2001 John noticed that the wood jewelry displayed in trade magazines and local stores was limited in both creativity and design and that quality pieces were very expensive. This observation inspired him to combine his jewelry designing skills with his woodworking knowledge to create a concept for wood jewelry that would mark a major change in the industry. Also, during this period, having developed a strong interest in the environment, he researched the idea of using more sustainable materials and discovered the amazing properties of Bamboo. Mindful of the fact we ALL need to protect and conserve our forests, that life depends on it, for every piece of jewelry sold John will plant a tree in cooperation with the Eden Project. John starts by selecting the highest quality furniture grade hardwoods from sustainably farmed forests. The wood is then processed and hand finished in his studio. He uses primarily American hardwoods including Cherry, Maple and Walnut. He also utilizes Bamboo veneers. The Bamboo is imported from China and the veneers are cut in the USA. Bamboo is the most sustainable woody plant on earth. Bamboo can be harvested every 5-6 years, then it regrows, allowing harvests from the same plant for over 100 years.

The design process begins with an original sketch which is then drafted into Auto Cad (computer drawing software) and then printed to a laser cutter. After numerous changes and prototypes the jewelry blank is finalized and prepared for production. The jewelry blank is removed from the laser, inspected for quality, then hand cleaned and polished. Finally the jewelry is assembled and mounted on John's custom cut display cards. His designs are inspired by the organic shapes in nature, sacred geometry, popular icons and traditional design motifs such as Art Deco or Medieval. John also makes Dream Boxes in similar patterns to his earring designs. The legend of the Dream Box suggests writing down your fondest dream, greatest desire or strongest wish on a small piece of paper. Put the paper in your Dream Box and place it beside your bed. Every morning and evening, hold your Dream Box and think about your dream, believing with all your heart that it is so. If done faithfully, your dream will come true.

More new stuff! Aren't these back scratchers fun? Designed to reach all those hard to scratch places and you can balance them on their beaks on a shelf or the mantle.

We just got in some wonderful wood products by Erik Jorgensen. Pictured above are the salmon wine bottle holders. Like magic, they balance a full bottle of wine and keep the wine cork wet while looking really cool.

Erik speaks about the wood he likes to use "I take great effort in making use of mother nature's resources by using recycled wood. Trees that are blown down by wind storms, some by city removal, and some from tree arborists who are sending logs to landfills. This makes for an earth friendly "green" supply of wood and keeps costs lower. I mill and air dry much of my wood. I also by 2nd grade lumber which mills normally burn or put in landfills."

Mini Teleidoscopes from David Kalish

In designing kaleidoscopes, David Kalish is challenged to create objects that are as alluring on the outside as they are within. Initially he doesn't want the observer to know the piece functions as a kaleidoscope. When that’s discovered the viewer delights in the unexpected surprise. ‘OOH' and 'AHH' and "OH, MY GOD" are common reactions. It simply boggles the mind that so much beauty can be contained within so small a space. Therein lies the magic!

David's designs tend to be sleek and contemporary, incorporating various combinations of metal, wood and acrylic. Many of his scopes feature polished gemstones in oil cells. Optical lenses and precision made mirrors systems transform nature's palate into brilliant, beautiful, often breathtaking kaleidoscopic patterns.

Whew! Made it through the holidays and now we're getting in new stuff for the upcoming year. You may have seen these before, we used to carry them when we were up on Big Mountain. Time seems to have flown by this summer and I have been neglecting to blog about new stuff coming in. Sorry about that! The photo above shows some new night lights that we received recently from Tracy and Justin Bull of Happy Owl Glassworks. We've got some really cute animals (who could resist a porcupine night light) and they are in bright, happy colors.

Here is the great new pottery from Always Azul. It has the lovely feel of Montana in a beautiful, deep green. It comes with moose, bear, dragonflies and pine cones. We have platters, wine coolers, spoon rests, pitchers and pie plates. So stop by to check it out and please say hello!

Aren't these flowers fun? They come on a stake to brighten up your garden any time of year. They are handcrafted by artist Kristi Thorndike-Kent. Here is what Kristi has to say about her work, "I design and make each item with great care and attention to detail to ensure it is beautiful and the highest quality. I start by sketching an idea on paper. I then select the colors of glass, cut the glass to size and shape with a variety of glass-cutting tools, assemble/decorate the piece and fire it in one of my kilns. Pieces are often fired to different temperatures or fired multiple times to get the right look. They are then finished by a metal stake so they are ready to display."

Brent Freed of Indian River Workshop crafts birds and fish out of driftwood and burls. His first love for his craft is the hunt and harvesting for the raw materials. Using nature's leftovers, Red and White Cedar Driftwood, he takes to the Hill Country of Texas and the rivers' edges of Northern Michigan. It is there that Brent's creative eye sees things others might not. Once back at his shop, intuition takes over and with strokes of the saw and turns of the sander, nature's leftovers are given new life in the form of ducks, swans, eagles, falcons and fish. Krista has a passion for all things vintage! It began during her years at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where she received a BFA in graphic design. She would go without lunches in order to buy books featuring vintage design collections. She loved it all: Opulent cigar label lithographs of the early 1900's, sleek and elegant Art Deco posters and packaging, whimsical images on vintage matchbook covers. When she first moved to New Mexico in 1995, she faced an apartment of bare walls. She decided to decorate in her favorite style and since she couldn't afford the real thing, she turned to her book collections.

"I pored through my books and found the images I loved best, then painted them large, on masonite or old wood and antiqued them," Krista explains. A couple of years later Jason Suttle, a friend knowing she was an artist (and a starving one at that), asked if she would do a painting of his Jack Russell named Fergus. Krista loved the idea and when Jason told her to just do whatever she wanted, she loved it even more. "I figured why not do it as a beer label, Flying Fergus Pale Ale - Good Dog Good Beer, with his little dog leaping through the center," says Krista. Jason loved the end result and so did everyone else, so she started taking commissions in the spring of 1998. Krista now produces an entire line of pet prints in her vintage retro style. The prints are 8x10" and ready for framing. If we don't have your breed in stock, we can order one to be sent directly to you. Mimi Werner - Featured Artist for June

Finley Point ceramic artist Mimi Werner is our featured artist for the month of June. Mimi’s new work takes on two divergent paths. In the 30 years Mimi has worked as a ceramic artist, she has primarily focused on high fired, functional porcelain wares. Due partly to economic times and the ecological crisis facing the planet Mimi is experimenting with electric fired porcelain using discarded auto parts to stamp relief into functional plates and baking dishes.

The covered vessels in this show are a theme that Mimi keeps returning to in her work. These pieces are fired in a kiln using wood as fuel. The mark of the flame is left directly on the clay. By using copper wire, masking tape and other combustibles, unpredictable, smoky patterns are burned onto the clay. These pieces reflect Mimi's continued fascination with the chemistry of flame and clay as well as the ritualized act of incorporating these pieces into our daily lives.

Meet Mimi during Whitefish Gallery Night, Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 6-9 PM. Mimi’s work will be displayed during the opening and throughout the month of June.

Eye and I Glass Jewelry

Eric Nelson of Eye and I Glass began blowing glass in 1998. He tries to reduce, reuse and recycle in his daily life and surroundings and this is what led him to create his line of glass jewelry.The idea evolved out of "recycling" shards of finished glass pieces that had broken for one reason or another. Eric selected the most interesting broken sections to bring back into the flame and polish off the edges for use as a necklace pendant. Because the glass piece was a small section of a larger work, the design and patterns would be unintentional, yet appealing for the uniqueness. He found that these sold well and began to think about creating a consistent source for these glass shards rather than waiting for a piece to break. Eric decided to work with frit glass for its ability to create endless patterns through the melting salt size pieces all the way down to a fine powder. Mixing different types and shades of frit gives my pieces varying degrees of color saturation and depth.

These beautiful pieces of glass jewelry have just arrived in the store. We have the multi piece neck wires, two sizes of french wire earrings and barrettes. They are so many different colors and patterns, you'll have to check them all out before you decide on the perfect pair of earrings!

New stuff is arriving that we ordered in Philadelphia. What fun! We just received these wonderful stained glass pieces by Hamid Emami of Artesano Gallery Glass. We have a wide variety of shapes including moons, hearts, stars, suns and crosses. They come in several sizes and can be hung on the wall or in the window. They are such bright colors that they make me hopeful that spring will arrive in Montana soon.

The medium and technique that Hamid uses is stained glass, glass beads, copper wire, agates and metal. Copper foil technique is used for making the stained glass. The glass is individually wrapped w/ copper foil and then soldered to free form wire figures or agates to create unique and contemporary sun catchers.

Fabric Jewels

Simple in concept, but challenging in execution, Meg Hannan's unique Fabric Jewels process has evolved over many a year. Using techniques of her own invention, she creates jewelry out of fabric and fibers. This original art form came into being through Meg's synthesis of painting, fiber art, and collage. The edge of the fabric is where this world blooms.

Meg uses mainly cotton and 97% of the fabrics used are from recycled sources. Many of the textiles and cords are hand dyed first; then she fully saturates them with liquid glue and roll them into a cane. The glue hardens and protects it. When dry, Meg slices the roll cross-section. The vivid, intricately detailed fiber millefiori slices are durable gems that then become lively lightweight earrings, pins and pendants. Luscious bead embellishments add movement to many of them and further enhance their texture and depth. Because the sliced fabric is almost weightless, wearing Meg's artwork is a pleasure!

Fabric Jewels are made in Seattle, in Meg's studio. She produces multiples of her designs in a limited number, but each fabric jewel varies in shape from slice to slice. Her use of hand dyed fabrics and cords imbues these slices with a lively glow and creates color changes throughout the roll. Because of these factors each piece is slightly different and has it’s own, one of a kind beauty.

We are featuring work by Kalispell artist Karen Leigh during the month of October. Inspired primarily by the beauty and spirit of her native Montana as well as travels abroad, Leigh offers original watercolors and commissioned work. Karen states, "Always on the lookout for 'accidental magnificence', I am particularly interested in finding beauty in unexpected places and in painting the more intimate details of life around me."

Karen is a fourth-generation Montanan who has lived in the Flathead Valley since 1970. A graduate of Montana State University, her primary interest has been transparent watercolor. Figures and portraits have recently become important subjects in her work. A full-time painter and signature member of the Montana Watercolor Society, she maintains a studio in the newly renovated Eastside Brick, formerly the local hospital. She also teaches privately and accepts commissions.

Ann Schwartz has been artistically etching glass since 1975. She has innovated and refined several sandblasting techniques that are unique in the production of artistically sandblasted glass and glassware. Ann designs and freehand draws all of Jaguar’s imagery. She also skillfully cuts all of her stencils by hand. Afterwards, she sandblast each piece individually. Elisa Drumm Van Auken grew up in Akron, Ohio with her parents, Don and Lisa Drum of Don Drumm Studio and Gallery, and her two younger sisters. Starting at age 12 she worked in the gallery and helped her mother with a line of soft sculptured dolls. During her childhood she spent summers at Penland School of Crafts studying with many well known artists while her parents taught.
Ms. Van Auken received her B.F.A. in textile design from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. After graduating she worked for Gilbert Frank in New York City as a colorist and surface designer for their Men’s Wear division. It was during her tenure there when she discovered that color and texture were her strong points.
In 1986 Ms. Van Auken moved to the Boston area with her husband Jeff. She created and sold a line of hand-printed clothing under the name of E. Drumm Designs. This collection caught the eye of many galleries and museum stores across the country.
In 1999 with the gift of several pewter heads designed by her father, Don Drumm, she created her first collection of wood angels. This collection has grown, greatly influenced by early American folk art and the Southwest. Each wood sculpture piece is cut from pine plank, sanded, carved, painted, and adorned. The collection currently consists of 50 limited edition pieces. She continues to collaborate with her father on many pieces.

She has continued to paint and sell her whimsical dogs and cats and has never looked back. Susan now lives with her husband, Bill, and their four dogs, Whoopi, Lulu, Muffin, and Boo in Redmond, Washington and Mesa, Arizona.

Starting with a blank canvas, Susan first makes an oil pastel drawing and then applies layers of vibrant acrylic paint. Traces of the drawing and many colorful layers of paint are visible in the finished work, imparting an air of spontaneity and directness. “Paintings develop the same way people develop, one step at a time. “I like the viewer to be able to see how a painting has evolved”, she says. Allowing the painting to develop is an essential part of her process. She remarks that the canvas seems to take on a life of its own as soon as she begins to paint. “I just have to get out of my own way, and let the painting flow through me.”

Wooden Wild Flowers

Wood Wildflowers is a collaboration between father and son, Ted and Nathaniel Nienow. All of the work they produce is based on their love of nature. Their flower designs begin with extensive photographic research. They choose a flower to model based on color, shape, and simple elegance. Once they have decided on a flower, art meets engineering. Making wood flow into smooth, delicate curves to mimic flowers in nature can be a difficult task. The many discarded prototypes lining their shop walls are proof of that.

Recreating wild flowers in wood is a process of selective simplification. The Nienows try to key in on the most distinct characteristics of a flower (often developing new production techniques as they go) and build up levels of detail until they’re satisfied they have an elegant and accurate yet reproducible representation of nature.

We just received these wonderful ceramic and fiber tassels from Holly Laginess of By Golly By Holly. They come in a multitude of yummy colors that can brighten up any home. Use them from curtain tie backs, window treatments, as fan or lamp pulls or to decorate your furniture. Each ceramic piece Molly builds herself, glazing it by hand and firing it. Hand building the vessels, glazing, drying and firing can take up to 3 weeks. After the parts are constructed she works towards their final assembly building them into functional art.
